NCSD hosted a series of workshops on congenital syphilis to highlight some of the innovative approaches jurisdictions are taking to combat these increasing numbers and create space for community action planning and problem-solving
To set a strong foundation for the workshop series, Dr. Bobby McDonald from DSTDP will presented on congenital syphilis (CS) epidemiology data, overall trends and themes related to CS around the country, and lead an initial discussion on potential barriers and solutions to combatting CS.
In this session, Texas spoke to their robust surveillance system and case review boards and New York City will share their data-driven approach to using and assigning Congenital Syphilis Prevention Investigators. These two jurisdictions dove into how surveillance, case review boards, and field services go hand in hand to address CS from all angles.
We often hear about missed opportunities in screening, diagnosis, and treatment when it comes to congenital syphilis. However, Los Angeles got creative with testing and treatment in non-traditional settings and shared case studies that highlighted their approach. Additionally, Louisiana showcased their innovative Bicillin delivery programs. And since we know rapid syphilis tests are instrumental to timely diagnosis, particularly in non-traditional settings, Diagnostics Direct discussed their Syphilis Health Check test and offered a free supply to select jurisdictions.
