Why We Celebrate

Disease Intervention Specialists (DIS) remain the backbone of public health in the United States. They wear many hats and take on many roles to protect people across the nation. Whether tackling STD prevention, tuberculosis outbreak response, HIV exposure notification, or emergency response – DIS bring a special set of skills and level of dedication matched by few in the field. Though DIS have specialized skill sets, their work often went undervalued for years.

Contact tracing strategies that received heightened visibility during the COVID-19 pandemic intersect with the tools and strategies that DIS have been using for decades. This year, the public health field received a historic investment to support the expansion of the DIS workforce. NCSD continues to support this vital workforce and the development of robust training programs, and we strive to celebrate their work and expertise through DIS Recognition Day.
