Here's the scoop on what's happening this week in Congress.
On Wednesday, June 12, the FY20 House Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations bill, through which STD prevention is funded, will be paired with State and Foreign Ops, Energy-Water, and Legislative Branch appropriations bills for the first minibus vote in the House. House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer plans to pass all twelve FY20 spending bills by the end of the month using minibus packages, a process by which multiple spending bills are put into one bill for consideration.
We are still waiting on the Senate to begin their appropriations process. The Senate Labor, Health and Human Services (LHHS) appropriations bill was expected to be discussed this week; however, the timing has been pushed back in hopes that Democrat and Republican leaders will reach a deal on spending caps. No agreement has been made yet, meaning the Senate will not have a higher budget number to appropriate to, limiting any possible funding increases. It is now expected that the Senate LHHS subcommittee will discuss the FY20 bill in subcommittee on Tuesday, June 25.
