Here's the scoop on what's happening this week in Congress.
This past week, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin have been discussing a budget caps deal, or how much the government can spend for FY20 and FY21. Disagreements and concerns have largely focused on coupling the spending caps deal with a debt ceiling agreement and how much the defense spending levels are raised in comparison to non-defense spending levels.
On Thursday morning, Secretary Mnuchin said that a deal had been reached between the administration and the House and Senate, with the caveat that offsets still needed to be identified to pay for the package. This deal will still need to go through final negotiations and be passed by both the House and Senate and signed by the President. House Democratic Leader Steny Hoyer has said that he would like the House to vote on the deal as early as next week before the congressional summer recess begins. In the meantime, please encourage your elected officials to support a spending caps deal.
