Here's the scoop on what's happening this week in Congress.
After a week of tense conversations about border wall funding between the President and leading congressional Democrats, it is likely that the government is headed for a shutdown after the continuing resolution ends on December 21st. However, a few members of congress have signaled support for a spending package for six of the remaining seven funding bills, which would push the discussion around FY19 Homeland Security funding, including a possible border wall, until next year.
If the government does shut down the CDC will not be affected because their FY19 budget has already been passed and signed into law. However, the Indian Health Service will still be affected. NCSD will keep you informed of any possible implications.
On Tuesday, December 11 during a speech at the Ryan White Conference HHS Secretary Azar announced Carl Schmid, deputy executive director of The AIDS Institute, and John Wiesman, secretary of health for Washington state and past president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officers as the co-chairs for the Presidential Advisory Council of HIV/AIDS (PACHA). Carl Schmid is one of the key policy leads for the HIV, STD, & Hepatitis Policy Partnership, of which NCSD is a part of. NCSD looks forward to working with Carl as he takes on this new role.
