In 2010, NCSD established a Rural Health Task Force as a means to address the challenges of providing STD services for rural populations and the unique issues these populations face, such as geographic isolation and assuring confidentiality in a small-town setting. This committee provides recommendations to NCSD and CDC about program initiatives, such as Program Collaboration & Service Integration and Health Care Reform that require stratified program models for varying geographic and population areas. Rural jurisdictions typically exhibit varying morbidity trends that require different models for prevention. In addition, rural and frontier communities may have lesser capacity and funding for operations and evaluation.

Founded in 1994, the Rural Center for AIDS/STD Prevention (RCAP) promotes HIV/STD prevention in rural America to reduce HIV/STD prevalance. RCAP is a joint project of Indiana University, University of Colorado, and the University of Kentucky.
