Washington, DC – Following the announcement on the selection of Dr. Bradley Stoner, MD, PhD, as the new Director of the CDC’s Division of STD Prevention (DSTDP), David C. Harvey, Executive Director of the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD), issued the following statement:

“We are thrilled that Dr. Bradley Stoner has been selected for one of the most critical leadership positions in the federal government’s response to the nation’s epidemics of sexually transmitted infections. On behalf of our membership – the professionals leading public health STI programs and the clinicians and disease intervention specialists (DIS) responding to STIs in every community across the country – we congratulate him on his new role.”

“Dr. Stoner is one of the world’s experts on STIs and understands the critical role partnerships and front-line leadership play at the intersection of science and program implementation. The nation’s STI crisis calls for bold leadership that centers collaboration from CDC with experts in state and local health departments. This is the kind of partnership that is necessary for creating the kind of rapid and nimble STI response that communities need to build on emerging innovations like Doxy PEP or rapid syphilis tests and to maintain a strong essential workforce to keep communities safe and healthy.”

“STI prevention is at a critical juncture. Although the nation has record-high STIs and a devastating syphilis resurgence, we have unprecedented opportunity with the release of the Doxy PEP guidelines, the federal syphilis task force led by Admiral Levine, and the implementation of a whole-of-government response under the Federal STI Implementation Plan. These initiatives along with the courageous leadership of STI public health programs, the private sector and the research community in every jurisdiction across the country have sped developments in our field. Dr. Stoner understands that new approaches, innovations and flexibility are required to best support a local response.”

“We look forward to partnering with Dr. Stoner to foster a CDC division that is bolstered by collaboration with front-line leaders, equipped to respond to the STI crisis at hand, and ready to strengthen the nation’s long-term health,” said David C. Harvey, Executive Director of the National Coalition of STD Directors (NCSD).
