Workshop Series: STI Service Integration Into Incarceration Facilities

Extracting from robust conversations on our member-only platform, My NCSD, and numerous TA requests from our members, we've curated a three part workshop series focusing on how we integrate STI service delivery into incarceration facilities. From planning, to implementation, and harnessing data to build sustainable interventions, we heard from programs and their DIS at every stage. View the slides and recordings below! Be on the lookout for the accompanying service delivery toolkit that will be shared later in July.

Workshop Series: STI Service Integration Into Incarceration Facilities

Part 3: Assessing Impact & Evaluation
The final workshop in the series focused on assessing impact and ongoing evaluation of services being implemented. Participants learned to:

  1. Understand the importance of assessing impact of service delivery.
  2. Utilize data collection tools to fine tune and expand services.

In this third and final workshop, we heard from Erin Sainato, NCSD’s Senior Manager of Program Evaluation. She outlined the importance of data-driven program planning, basics of evaluating services being implemented into incarceration facilities, and how to harness data you may already have access to fine tune services being provided in IFs. Sonya Khan, NCSD’s Senior Manager of Disease Intervention and DIS also discussed DIS role in assessing impact and communicating trends to advocate for and justify expansion of STI services.

In the second workshop, participants learned to:

  1. Identify necessary logistics for service delivery
  2. Understand health department partnerships that provide 340B eligibility and other arrangements that ensure STD treatment

Part 2 of this series focused on the logistics of service delivery including treatment and partner services by DIS. We heard about efforts in Pueblo County, Colorado that ensure treatment of incarcerated persons. We’ll also learn about department of health correctional 340B partnerships across the country from STD 340B expert and NCSD Consultant Erin Fratto.

Part 1: Planning for Partnerships
In the first workshop, participants learned to:

  1. Assess programmatic need for STI services in incarceration facilities
  2. Identify partners and key individuals needed to successfully establish STI services into incarceration facilities

In our first conversation, we heard from Dr. Julie Dombrowski, Deputy Director, HIV/STD Program, Public Health Seattle-King County and attending physician at Madison Clinic at Harborview Medical Center and Luis Enrique Herrera Perales, Disease Research and Investigation Specialist (DRIS) at Public Health Seattle-King County on their pilot STI testing program within King County incarceration facilities. We learned about factors they considered for implementation of services, DRIS operationalization, their impact, and some challenges they’ve faced.
