Routine Screening for Infectious Diseases in Rural Areas

Join the American Medical Association as we explore the importance of routinely screening for infectious diseases, including HIV, STIs, viral hepatitis, and latent TB, in emergency departments.
Hosted By
American Medical Association
Event Date
July 29, 2026

Communities in rural areas can face unique challenges – less access to specialists, fewer options for public transportation and higher mortality rates. Rural physicians are positioned to have a big impact on improving patient health. Join us as we discuss the role rural emergency departments can play in routinely screening for infectious diseases, including HIV, sexually transmitted infections, viral hepatitis and latent tuberculosis. CME available.

Speakers:

    • Dr. Erica Kaufman West, AMA (Host)
    • Dr. Phillip Moschella, Clemson University

Learning Objectives:

    1. Identify the infectious diseases that patients living in rural areas should be tested for
    2. Explain how routinely screening patients for infectious diseases in rural emergency departments can improve health outcomes
    3. Describe care models that can help increase access to routine screening for infectious disease among patients living in rural areas
