Here's the scoop on what's happening this week in Congress.
On Wednesday night, the Senate passed a $2 trillion emergency relief and stimulus package in response to coronavirus. The Bill titled A Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act includes $4.3 billion at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support federal, state, and local public health agencies to prevent, prepare for, mitigate, and respond to the coronavirus.
Included in the funding to CDC is $1.5 billion to support state, local, territorial, and tribal health departments in their efforts to conduct public health activities including carrying out surveillance, laboratory testing support, infection control, and contact tracing. The House is expected to pass the bill today, Friday, March 27.
The House and Senate have indicated plans to consider a fourth coronavirus supplemental package. This package is expected to address expanded family and medical leave, options for remote voting, and increase occupational health and safety regulations. No deadline has been given as to when the fourth supplemental bill will be taken up, but Senate Republicans have indicated they plan on taking a recess and will use the time to consider and prepare for bill number four.
