NCSD will work with our partner organizations to provide transition positions and background information to the incoming Administration about state STD surveillance, prevention, and care programs and the need for the Affordable Care Act and evidence-based sexual health programs, among other priorities.

David C. Harvey

Dear NCSD Members,

The results of the election are stunning and the world is reacting this morning to an outcome that was not expected. Votes are still being counted and the final Electoral College tallies are not available. I am sure many of you, like me, were up much of the night watching the returns and wondering what this election means on a personal level and for our work in public health.

Please know that NCSD will work with our partner organizations to provide transition positions and background information to the incoming Administration about state STD surveillance, prevention, and care programs and the need for the Affordable Care Act and evidence-based sexual health programs, among other priorities.  We will advocate for the funding needs of states and we will closely monitor the process of political appointees, making recommendations and offering assistance wherever possible. Through a re-invigorated NCSD health policy committee, the board and staff will be seeking your input on the policy positions adopted by the organization, as we enter this momentous period of transition in the Administration and new leadership in Congress.

As you likely already know, the Republicans retain the majority in the House with 240 seats. Democrats gained nine seats. Republicans also retained control of the Senate, with Democrats gaining one seat so far. Two Senate races are yet to be determined. Twelve states and two territories held elections for Governors. Two states are too close to call. Typically, who leads key committees of Congress changes after an election – stay tuned for more information.

As developments occur in the days, weeks, and months ahead, NCSD will send you additional updates. This will be a time for our organization and community to rise to whatever opportunities and challenges lie ahead, depending on the outcome of policy and budget deliberations and the political appointment process.

We have much to do – I look forward to working with you as we engage in this transition. Please feel free to be in touch if you have thoughts you want to share on the way forward. I look forward to further discussions at the NCSD Annual Meeting, December 6-9, in Phoenix Arizona. I strongly encourage you, if you haven’t done so already, to register and attend this year. We need your voice and leadership as we engage in the transition of Administrations.

With great respect,
David C. Harvey
