Three Burning Questions – Sara Stahlberg, NCSD

Meet Sara Stahlberg, Associate Director, Programs with NCSD.

Release Date
September 14, 2019

What do you love most about working in STD prevention?

The people. I feel so fortunate to work every day with colleagues and partners who are passionate, creative, and scrappy. I love being a part of the effort to actively promote health equity and to normalize conversations about sexual health. In my work specifically to support adolescent populations, I am continually inspired by young people amplifying their voices and fighting for their rights to access quality sexual health services and education. The future of our field is in good hands!

Sara Stahlberg, NCSD

What do you think are the biggest challenges facing our field?

There are a few key challenges that come to mind – 1) resources and 2) structural inequalities. Our field is consistently asked to do more with less in an increasingly politicized climate – at a time when STDs are at historic highs. This isn’t sustainable. And there are communities who continue to be disproportionately affected due to persisting structural inequalities – policies, practices, stigma, etc. We must center people of color, youth, LGBTQ folks, immigrants, and others, fighting for and with these historically marginalized communities. We must continue to be responsive to targeted cuts to safety net and other services, think critically about the impacts of policy change, and effectively and thoughtfully allocate resources. I am proud to work for an organization that takes these challenges seriously and works tirelessly to support our partners.

Sara Stahlberg, NCSD

When you’re not working, what’s your favorite thing to do with your free time?

I love spending time outside, travelling, and exploring new places. Living in California affords me the opportunity to enjoy the mountains, beach, redwoods, and rugged coastlines all within a short drive. On weekends, you’ll usually find me on a trail somewhere, spending time with my family and friends, or catching up on mindless reality TV (my personal favorite is Below Deck).

Meet Sara

Sara provides day-to-day management of programmatic deliverables and reporting at NCSD, and leadership on all adolescent-focused initiatives. Prior to joining NCSD, Sara worked for the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS), where she focused on improving access to sexual health information and services, and creating safe and supportive environments for students in the highest need middle and high schools. Sara holds a BA from American University and MPH from The George Washington University. Sara is based California and in her spare time, she can be found swimming, hiking, and trying new recipes.
