Here's what's happening this week in Congress.
In a letter dated October 10, 2018, Senator Patty Murray (Wash.), the Ranking Member of the HELP Committee, requested that Surgeon General Jerome Adams address the high rates of STDs. This letter urges Dr. Adams to use his office to raise awareness about the rise in STDs and to engage with other agencies to bolster the national response.
“I write to ask that you take immediate action to raise public awareness of the problem and engage all relevant federal agencies in taking evidence-based steps to address the problem, with particular focus on prevention amongst populations most at risk of contracting STDs.”
This is the first time, in recent memory, that a Senator has sent a letter to the Surgeon General that solely addresses STDs. The letter helps to publicly raise awareness about STDs and paves the way for future collaboration on STD prevention.
NCSD asks that the Surgeon General seriously consider the recommendations outlined in this letter. We also pledge our support and willingness to partner with the Surgeon General’s office to increase public awareness of this worsening public health issue, and to identify opportunities for prevention.
