NCSD talks STD prevention on the global stage at the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) Conference in Dublin, Ireland

Harvey, NCSD’s executive director, attended the International Union against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI) Conference in Dublin, Ireland. Reduced US Federal STD Funding Would Force Cutbacks to Core Public Health: A Survey of State and Local STD Directors

Takeaways: In this NCSD study, the authors found for every $1 of federal STD funding, states invested $0.43. With reduced ferderal funding, states would be required to cut DIS and innovative projects. 20-40% of DIS are funded with STD dollars and 64% of states/cities have state-funded STD clinics, with 539 such clinics identified.
High Rates of STIs Among MSM using PrEP

Takeways: This presentation relayed some evidence of increased STIs among PrEP patients and suggested there may be an opportunity to engage MSM in better STI prevention efforts.
Decade of Progress in Global Congenital Syphilis Elimination, 2007-2016.

Takeaways: in 2014 WHO established guidance and criteria for validating country elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of both syphilis and HIV using dual rapid HIV/syphilis screening. In 2017 WHO committed to “EMTCT Plus,” leveraging a Maternal and Child Health platform to eliminate MTCT of HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and Chagas. A number of countries have successfully eliminated MTCT with more on verge of elimination.
