Medical providers have a critical role to play in improving the health outcomes of Black and Latino men who have sex with men (BLMSM). Studies reinforce the significance of clinicians offering vaccine and recommending diagnostic STD testing.
In response to the increase rates of STD and HIV infection among Black and Latino Men who have Sex with Men (BLMSM), NCSD and NASTAD have created the Optimal Care Checklists (OCC). The OCCs were designed to facilitate a more comfortable sexual health conversation for the MSM patient and his Provider. The provider OCC- Providing Optimal Care for Your MSM Patients serves as a tool to familiarize providers with the unique sexual health needs of Black and Latino MSM, while the patient OCC- For Men Only: Your Sexual Health better informs BLMSM about STD testing options, vaccinations and other sexual health information. Both tools stress the importance of decreasing stigma and promoting a non-judgmental environment.
