For weeks, our MPV Working Group had been working to support the White House’s $4.5 billion emergency MPV funding as Congress hurtled toward a September 30 deadline to fund the government through a Continuing Resolution (CR). We were disheartened this week to see that the CR passed without support for MPV.
On Wednesday, we hosted a press conference featuring clinics on the front lines of the MPV outbreak. These are STD clinics that typically devote their time to providing services for STDs and HIV, but have had to shift gears and work unpaid overtime to test, treat, and vaccinate for MPV. Watch their stories here.
We also held our bi-weekly MPV Working Group meeting on Wednesday, and touched base with White House Deputy Monkeypox Response Coordinator Demetre Daskalakis. Together, we brainstormed how to approach our ongoing funding asks and how to keep pressing forward toward an end-of-year omnibus package, the next funding opportunity.
Looking ahead, we are hosting a webinar focused on supporting college students – Addressing MPV on a College Campus Utilizing a Health Equity Approach – and prepping to head to USCHA in Puerto Rico where we look forward to connecting in-person with so many of our partners.
